Johnny Depp was surprised to be cast as King Louis XV in the upcoming French film Jeanne du Barry. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Depp said that he was “flattered” to be offered the role, but he also felt like an “imposter.”

“I’m some hillbilly from Kentucky,” Depp said. “I don’t know anything about French history or culture. But I’m a big fan of Maïwenn, the director, and I was excited to work with her.”

“I didn’t want to just do an impersonation,” Depp said. “I wanted to create a character that was both historically accurate and also relatable to a modern audience.”
